The Minnesota Timberwolves have kicked off the season to the tune of a 17-9 record. Chris Finch has continued to push his team through the regular season, but they have their sights set on an NBA Finals.

Despite failing to get over the hump last season, president Tim Connelly largely ran back the same roster. It continues to be apparent that the rotation needs a playmaking point guard. Mike Conley isn’t that at this stage of his career, and the team is poking around on the trade market.

We’re still a ways from teams declaring their intentions prior to the trade deadline. However, Minnesota may not be interested in waiting that long and is just waiting to strike.

Darius Garland on Timberwolves radar

Recently there was news that Coby White was someone Minnesota found interest in. That was quickly shot down, but it’s clear Minnesota would like to add someone. Add Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland’s name to the list.

The Timberwolves, Magic, and Wizards would be considered potential candidates to pursue Darius Garland from Cleveland if the Cavs engage in trade discussions centered around the 2x All-Star.

Garland should receive strong interest from teams in need of lead guard duties.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are just 15-12 this season. After their 64-18 record as the top team in the Eastern Conference last year, it would be correct to suggest they have disappointed.

Gardland himself has regressed as well. After making his second All-Star Team last year while averaging 20.6 points per game, stats have sagged across the board. His 36.2% rate from the field is a career-low, and his 15.5 points per game are the lowest mark since his rookie season.

The return for Garland may be muted because of his production, but could be tied to his health as well. He had offseason surgery to address a turf toe issue and has played in just 11 games this year. The former fifth overall pick may be reinvigorated by a fresh opportunity playing alongside Anthony Edwards.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are just slightly under the second apron when it comes to salary cap constraints, so they don’t have a ton of room to juggle things. It’s clear that a point guard could help to push this team forward though, and they struggle to find rhythm every game without an answer.
