Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool transfer target holds two meetings with club and 'the attention is…

Liverpool 2-0 Brighton: match review

Liverpool failed to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window.

Marc Guehi’s representatives have held talks with a European giant as a transfer to Liverpool remains in question.

Guehi’s Palace contract expires at the end of the season and it has been confirmed that he won’t be extending his stay at Selhurst Park. He will be a free agent, meaning that several clubs have been showing an interest.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Guehi’s representatives have twice held discussions with Bayern. But the Bundesliga champions’ decision on whether to make a move could hinge on the future of Dayot Upamecano, who is out of contract at the Allianz Arena at the end of the campaign.

Appearing on Men in Blazers, Romano said: “The truth is Liverpool are still there. The deal was almost done and it did not go through in the final minutes because of what happened with Palace.

“Liverpool are still a solution for Marc Guehi, eventually on a free in the January transfer window. I can guarantee there have already been two meetings with Bayern. Bayern could look for a centre-back in the summer transfer window and English players are very comfortable there, as we can see with Harry Kane.

“Let's see what happens with Upamecano because Upamecano is a crucial piece of this puzzle. If he decides to extend his contract, maybe Guehi could be a different solution. If he [Upamecano] leaves on a free then Guehi could be a serious target.

“Then there is interest from Spain as well because Barcelona called, Real Madrid did the same but at the moment, it's not advanced. Some rumours about Italian clubs but I've been told it's impossible to make it happen for Italian clubs. For sure, Marc Guehi is leaving Palace and the attention is serious. The Bayern situation is interesting and it's going to be crucial to see what happens with Upamecano.”

Speaking on Guehi’s collapsed move to Liverpool, Palace chairman Steve Parish explained: "Marc was great about it as a person. They'd made an offer. It was Liverpool. It was a massive club, he was obviously interested in going. But he was fine about it, staying, if that was the decision we make. Obviously it means all of the ball is in his court tremendously as a player and he's got the choice of wherever he wants to go.

"It was a very difficult one but I think definitely the right one. We needed to keep Marc because the difference between us having a stellar season and having a relegation threatened season is us winning five games or not. "The margins are so tight. We felt it was a significant risk. With all the calculations, we decided it wasn't the right time."
