Fabrizio Romano has confirmed some slightly worrying news regarding Marc Guehi ahead of the January transfer window.
The January transfer window is often viewed as a strategic opportunity for clubs to fix weaknesses or take advantage of contract situations that can’t be addressed in the summer. For Liverpool, it has historically been a period of careful tweaking rather than dramatic overhaul.
But the upcoming winter window in 2026 could be a turning point — particularly when it comes to Marc Guehi.
Timing will be everything. Under FIFA rules, Guehi can begin negotiating and even sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1, opening the door for European giants like Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are said to be monitoring the England defender closely.
To avoid losing ground in the race, Liverpool could look to strike a deal with Crystal Palace this January, securing the player before continental sides make their move.
But it seems that one European side has already made their move.
Fabrizio Romano, speaking on Men In Blazers, has reported that Guehi and his representatives have already had two meetings with Bayern Munich:
“The truth is Liverpool are still there. The deal was almost done and it did not go through in the final minutes because of what happened with Palace.”
“Liverpool is still a solution for Marc Guehi, eventually on a free in the January transfer window. I can guarantee there have already been two meetings with Bayern. Bayern could look for a centre-back in the summer transfer window and English players are very comfortable there, as we can see with Harry Kane.”
“Let’s see what happens with Upamecano because Upamecano is a crucial piece of this puzzle. If he decides to extend his contract, maybe Guehi could be a different solution. If he leaves on a free then Guehi could be a serious target.”
“Then there is interest from Spain as well because Barcelona called, Real Madrid did the same but at the moment, it’s not advanced. Some rumours about Italian clubs but I’ve been told it’s impossible to make it happen for Italian clubs. For sure, Marc Guehi is leaving Palace and the attention is serious. The Bayern situation is interesting and it’s going to be crucial to see what happens with Upamecano.”
