Liverpool could potentially offload this statement summer signing after just one season at Anfield

Liverpool spent a record-breaking £446 million on new signings during the summer transfer window but their team transition is still proving to be a slow and sticky process.

More than £300 million of the Reds’ cash went on improving their attack but performances have no played out the way the club and the rest of the world expected.

Florian Wirtz became the club’s first blockbuster signing of the window, setting a new club transfer record of £116 million, before Alexander Isak’s late arrival. Fans were eager to see Wirtz involved in Arne Slot’s set-up, having impressed with 16 goals and 15 assists in all competitions as a 21-year-old.

The midfielder looked to be the exact piece in Liverpool’s attacking puzzle they had been missing but his slow start to life at Anfield has raised doubts about his future.

Liverpool ‘considering’ selling Florian Wirtz

According to Defensa Central, Liverpool are already ‘considering’ selling Wirtz as his first goal in red continues to evade him.

The 22-year-old has contributed just five assists in 21 appearances so far in his maiden season but continues to draw a blank on the goalscoring front. Frustrations started to mount among Liverpool fans, who have been waiting to see the best of their summer signing.

However, it took Wirtz 13 games before he eventually opened up his creative account in the Premier League. The midfielder thought he had scored his first goal for the Reds against Sunderland but it was cruelly registered as an own goal in the end, giving him the assist instead. This means that after 21 appearances in all competitions, Wirtz is still without his first Liverpool goal.

Now, the Reds are considering selling up after just one season and they are reportedly willing to lower their asking price. After forking out £115 million, the Premier League champions have reduced their valuation to €110 million (£97m).

In the midst of this information, Real Madrid are reportedly lurking and have Wirtz on their shortlist for potential transfers in 2026.

Will Real Madrid sign Florian Wirtz?

New Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso knows Wirtz very well from their time at Bayer Leverkusen together, and the Spanish coach is eager to be reunited with his former player.

Similar to Slot’s situation on Merseyside, things have been rocky for Alonso at Madrid recently. The Liverpool icon has come under scrutiny in recent weeks as a mixed bag of results have placed him under some pressure.

Amid the speculation over whether Alonso would be axed by his former side, Fabrizio Romano reported that Real Madrid are considering replacing him with B team manager Alvaro Arbeloa, while Zinedine Zidane and Jurgen Klopp have also been linked.

“The situation remains one to watch in the upcoming games and the upcoming weeks, I would say,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

While there is the risk of the axe being wielded at Madrid, the report on Wirtz claims that if Alonso keeps his job, it could be a boost in their pursuit of signing the German.

The manager reportedly wants to see Wirtz join the club and link up with his once again. If the club win a trophy this season, that may also see them willing to spend such a big amount on signing Wirtz.
