Last week, Shams Charania reported that Young was “optimistic” he would rejoin the club at some point in December, and he appears to be right on track to make his highly anticipated return.
The Hawks have managed fairly well in his absence, winning 14 of their 23 games since Young went down, with Jalen Johnson firmly inserting himself into the conversation among the league’s elite. It will be fascinating to see how that dynamic shifts once Young is back in the lineup. It certainly feels like a changing of the guard may be underway in Atlanta, but there is a world where the two can coexist, and that’s what the Hawks are hoping to evaluate before making a definitive decision on Young’s future, whether at the trade deadline or during the offseason.
Young holds a $49 million player option for next season, one he is almost certain to decline in pursuit of a longer-term deal. He has made it clear he would like to remain in Atlanta, and the Hawks are in position to offer him the most lucrative contract available. The next few months will ultimately determine whether the Trae Young era continues with the franchise that famously traded Luka Dončić for him on draft night more than seven years ago.
