Opinion: Chelsea should secure 'special' January signing with swap deal involving Tyrique George

Chelsea are focusing on youth over starter-quality players in their January recruitment efforts, but a Tyrique George swap deal for a player the Blues love would kill two birds with one stone.

Chelsea have been eyeing a ‘special’ young talent for some time, and have a brilliant opportunity to bring him in and get another wantaway player off the books in the process.

George has been pushing for a Stamford Bridge exit since the summer. He believes he is ready for a larger role and doesn’t see a pathway under Enzo Maresca.

A long list of clubs admire George, and it shouldn’t be difficult to find a suitor.

But one club that has already expressed interest in the England youngster also has a talent Chelsea have been ‘hugely impressed’ with.

Yan Diomande for Tyrique George is the perfect solution for Chelsea

RB Leipzig were one of the clubs sniffing around a potential George deal back in the summer.

The Germany route has yielded brilliant results for a number of young English players in recent years.

Chelsea scouts love Yan Diomande, a 19-year-old left winger currently shining for the German side. He certainly fits BlueCo’s preferred age profile, and is one of the most exciting players to watch in the Bundesliga.

The Chelsea Chronicle revealed exclusively last month that Diomande is one to keep an eye on for a potential Stamford Bridge move, and George’s situation offers the perfect avenue.

It would have to be a ‘player + cash’ deal, with the Ivorian’s valuation pushing close to £90 million.

But it would be a way of easing the financial burden somewhat, and more importantly, offering Leipzig an instant solution to the loss of their star winger.

Diomande a better fit for Enzo Maresca

It’s a shame that George looks almost certain to leave. The Cobham graduate has heaps of talent and has shown real flashes of quality in limited minutes for Chelsea.

But George is more of a second striker than a touchline-hugging winger like Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens.

Diomande is a more dangerous version of the profile Maresca wants on the left, and it’s a position that is ripe for the taking. That feels harsh on Garnacho after a crucial brace against Cardiff, but the fact is that position hasn’t been convincingly claimed.

If Leipzig still want George — there has been nothing to suggest otherwise — it feels like a no-brainer to at least field the idea of a swap.
