Carabao Cup semi-final draw as Newcastle United, Chelsea & Man City find out opponents

Eddie Howe's pre-match press conference v Fulham

Carabao Cup draw: Newcastle United find out their semi-final opponents following their win over Fulham at St James’ Park.

The hosts, looking for a response to Sunday’s derby defeat against Sunderland, started slowly at St James’ Park as Fulham dominated the ball. However, against the run of play, they took the lead as Wissa netted his first goal just ten minutes into his first start as a Magpies player.

Their lead lasted just six minutes though before Lukic netted an equaliser for the visitors. Lukic, who also scored an equaliser in the Premier League meeting between the sides in October, found space in the box to head a powerful effort past Aaron Ramsdale to restore parity.

After a quiet start to the game, the Magpies began to dominate both the ball, momentum and territory as they pushed for a second goal. Bruno Guimaraes went close with a curling effort before the break and they did have the ball in the Fulham goal again midway through the second-half, but a flag from the assistant had correctly spotted that Jacob Murphy had strayed into an offside position before his cross was diverted into the Gallowgate goal.

Newcastle United continued to push for a winner and the introduction of Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade certainly added an urgency to their game. However, it was one of their starters, Miley, that grabbed the all important winner with a great header.

The teenager had been unfortunate to see an effort saved by Benjamin Lecomte just moments earlier, but was on hand to get his head onto the resulting corner and, for the second time this season, help the Magpies to a late win over the Cottagers.

That win ensured Newcastle United’s place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals for the second successive season and that their defence of the trophy would continue until at least February.

Carabao Cup semi-final draw

Elsewhere in the Carabao Cup, Chelsea were the first team to secure their place in the final four after beating League One leaders Cardiff City in south Wales. Manchester City then booked their spot in the draw with a 2-0 win over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Rayan Cherki and Savinho sealed the win for Pep Guardiola’s side. The final tie sees Arsenal take on Crystal Palace.

That game will be played on Tuesday night. Palace are in Conference League action tomorrow night, resulting in their Carabao Cup match needing to be moved.
