Norway legend says Walle Egeli has made 'perfect first step' in joining Ipswich

Walle Egeli had interest from several top European clubs back in the summer, including FC Porto and Club Brugge, but he opted to join the Blues from Danish club FC Nordsjælland for a Championship record fee of £17.5m.

The 19-year-old attacker - who grew up a Liverpool fan - has been gradually finding his feet in England and recently scored in back-to-back games against Blackburn and Coventry.

"Obviously the dream for Norwegian players is the Premier League and I think the Championship can be a great first move," said Riise, who helped Liverpool win the Champions League before going on to play for Roma and Fulham.

"It’s a tough league, with big clubs. There’s more money, and it’s more professional now. The move up from the Championship to the Premier League is big, but it’s doable. For some Norwegians, a move to the Championship is a perfect step. It’s the right way to get to the Premier League for some players."

Speaking to footitalia.com, Norway's most capped player ever added: "There’s also Aune Heggebo at West Brom, too. They’ve both taken sensible decisions, to go to the Championship to test themselves. Once they’ve proven they can cut it, they can then take it to the next level, the Premier League. I think that is the right move for them both. I’m excited to see how far they can both go."

Walle Egeli recently said he was 'the calmest man in Ipswich' when it came to his 11-goal wait to register a first goal for the club.

Experienced team-mate Ashley Young said of the teenager: "That’s exactly the way he is - he’s so laid back!

"When the ball rolled across to him at Blackburn I think everyone was like ‘this is going to be a goal’. That’s the way he is in training. He’s so calm, so relaxed."

Asked if he'd tried to pass on some of his experience to the youngster, the 40-year-old former England man joked: "If I pulled him aside and told him about when I played as a winger he’d probably say ‘I wasn’t even born!’ I talk to everyone in the squad and obviously if I can give him any advice in any way then I’ll do that.

"He can become whatever he wants to become. He can definitely become a high level player, a world class player if he wants to, because he’s got all the attributes."

Meanwhile, Blues boss Kieran McKenna said: "He's very mature, very calm, very considered. He doesn't get too up or too down, which is important.

"Of course, he feels better having had a couple of goals. And they've been important goals as well. One puts a point on the board and the other is the first goal in a big game.

"His finishing ability is excellent. I know that if we get him in positions consistently around the box then he's going to score goals.

"It's important to for him to keep working on all the bits of his game, contributing in every phase and keep developing himself.

"He's played a lot of football for someone of his age that is new to the country, so we have to keep managing him in the right way. But I think he's progressing well."

Town defender Cedric Kipre said of the teenager: "I think he's a talented boy with a very good left foot, similar to Jaden (Philogene). They're very tricky boys. He's a quiet guy, still young, but I'm sure he will go very far."

Speaking further on Walle Egeli, who missed Town's 3-1 defeat at Leicester last weekend through illness, Blues left-back Leif Davis added: "He’s a young boy who has moved from a different country and that will be hard. Not seeing friends and family too often is something I found tough when I first moved away from home.

“He’s just got to believe in himself because he’s got the quality. He’s a very good footballer, I see that every day. Now I think he’s starting to feel confident out there and is starting to enjoy his football and do everything he can for the team."
