Newcastle United 2-1 Fulham: Joe Buck match reaction
Newcastle United news: The Carabao Cup holders booked their place in the semi-finals with a win over Fulham.
An early Yoane Wissa goal was cancelled out by Sasa Lukic’s equaliser just six minutes later and it appeared that those two goals would be enough to see the game progress to a penalty shootout. However, Lewis Miley had something to say about that as he got his head onto a wicked Sandro Tonali corner during stoppage time to seal the win for his side.
Miley, who had been denied by a great stop from Benjamin Lecomte just moments earlier, stole a lead on his marker to nod the ball over Lecomte and desperate defenders into the Gallowgate goal. Post-match, an ecstatic Miley told Sky Sports of his feelings after netting that winner: “Great feeling. I thought I'd try to flick it on, and it luckily hit the back of the net and I'm buzzing.
“It's an unreal feeling. I grew up here, it couldn't be a better feeling and hopefully we progress to the final.
“We won it last season and hopefully we can do that again this year. The last result wasn't good for us, but getting that win tonight was good for us.”
That goal ensured the holders’ quest to retain their trophy would prolong until at least February. However, that dream will have a big opponent to slay in the next round as they face a daunting two-legged tie against Manchester City.

Whilst the Magpies were victorious over Pep Guardiola’s side in the Premier League last month, they do not enjoy a very good record against the Citizens. They have won just once at the Etihad Stadium since it was opened - although that did come in this competition back in 2014.
Sky Sports reveal stunning Newcastle United stat
In the wake of Newcastle United’s win over Fulham at St James’ Park, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie revealed that the Magpies had equalled a 30-year record held by Liverpool in this competition. Newcastle’s win over Fulham means they have now won nine games in a row in regulation time - a feat no-one has achieved since the 1990’s.
Of course, one of those nine-consecutive victories came against Liverpool in March at Wembley. AFC Wimbledon, Chelsea, Brentford, Arsenal (in both legs of their semi-final clash), Bradford City, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham were the other victims of that sensational run.
Newcastle United will be desperate to continue that run when they face the Citizens in the first-leg of their semi-final meeting in January. City were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United during the 2023/24 Carabao Cup - a campaign that ended in quarter-final heartache for the Magpies at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea will make up one-half of the other semi-final line-up and are a potential opponent for the Magpies if they are able to get past Guardiola’s side. The Blues will play either Arsenal or Crystal Palace in the semi-final and will discover their exact opponents when their quarter-final tie is played on Tuesday night at the Emirates Stadium.
