A positive injury update has emerged regarding Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, courtesy of reliable journalist James Pearce.
The Hungarian suffered a knock late on in the Reds’ 2-0 victory at home to Brighton last weekend, acting as a major concern.
Szoboszlai has stood out as Liverpool’s best player so far this season, arguably comfortably, so not having him available for a chunk of time would be a big setback.
Thankfully, The Athletic‘s Pearce took to X on Wednesday to share a positive injury update on the 25-year-old, and Joe Gomez, even saying the former could be fit to face Tottenham on Saturday night:
“Positive news LFC. Szoboszlai hoping to be fit for trip to Spurs. No final decision yet but recovering well after being forced off v Brighton. Joe Gomez’s hamstring injury not serious but set to miss weekend and LFC will adopt cautious approach with him.”
Much-needed injury boost for Slot and Liverpool
This is great news for Arne Slot and anyone of a Liverpool persuasion, considering how fantastic Szoboszlai has been in recent months, proving to be a rare positive in a season of struggle.
The Hungary captain has shone in several positions and impressed hugely with his work ethic, also being lauded by Slot after his match-winning performance at home to Arsenal back in August:
“He’s always been the player that I think he understands what a Liverpool player should look like,” Slot said of Szoboszlai. If you wear this shirt, you should give everything no matter in what position you play. As a midfielder, he’s always the first one to track back and to press high.
“And today I don’t think he did anything wrong. Unbelievable game from him in the position he probably paid only two or three times in his life so it tells you a lot about the mentality he has.”
It looks like Szoboszlai is in contention to start against Spurs, in another important game, with Liverpool potentially lining up similarly to the Brighton game.
That would mean accommodating Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Floran Wirtz, with Hugo Ekitike continuing in favour of the struggling Alexander Isak.
