Giorgi Mamardashvili is not the only goalkeeper who thinks he can replace Alisson at Liverpool

Liverpool supporters may have to come to terms with the possibility that they are watching Alisson Becker’s final season with the club.

The goalkeeper is likely to trigger an extension to his contract, which is due to end in 2026, keeping him at Anfield for an extra year.

However, there are already some whisperings that this will only be done in order to secure Liverpool a fee, with suggestions that Alisson could be sold next summer.

While that would be saddening for every Liverpool fan, they can at least take some solace in the fact that in Giorgi Mamardashvili, the club have already secured themselves an able replacement.

The Georgian is expected to take over duties from Alisson whenever he does eventually exit Liverpool. But after a new claim from on-loan goalie Vitezslav Jaros, Mamardashvili may face some competition for his starting spot.

Vitezslav Jaros ready to challenge for Liverpool role

Liverpool’s goalkeeping department has never been better stocked, and Jaros certainly plays his part in that.

After spending the 2024/25 season with the Reds – and playing twice for the first team – the Czech shot-stopper is currently installed as Ajax’s first choice keeper.

Gaining regular experience ahead of a slated return to Anfield in 2026, Jaros has now claimed that despite having two top goalkeepers ahead of him at Liverpool, he believes he can become number one for the Reds.

“When I’ll be ready to become Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper is difficult to say—especially with two formidable rivals like Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili—because taking their place isn’t easy,” the 24-year-old told Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

“But that’s ultimately the goal. And once I achieve that, I want to win the Champions League.”

Jaros primed to become Liverpool’s back-up

There is of course a chance that Alisson is not yet finished at Liverpool and that he stays to fulfil his contract or stay beyond it. Supporters will hold out hope that that will be the case.

But for now it feels more likely that the 33-year-old will depart, leaving Mamardashvili and Jaros as Arne Slot’s two options for the 2026/27 season.

Youngster Armin Pecsi is highly thought of at Anfield, but will likely not be ready for a bigger role just yet.

Mamardashvili will be the clear number one, and given that he is less than one year younger than the Georgian, it is hard to see how Jaros can leapfrog him.

Jaros has earned praise for his Ajax performances this season, though, and is clearly a very accomplished goalkeeper. If Alisson does go, Liverpool are in safe hands.
