Carragher Claims Liverpool Transfer Deal Has "Blown Up In Their Face" With U-Turn Now Likely

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed that the collapse of Marc Guehi’s transfer in the summer has cost the Reds dearly.

The form of Ibrahima Konate has really damaged the club’s prospects, but with few alternatives in the squad, head coach Arne Slot has had to stick by the Frenchman.

Carragher says that Guehi would have added depth in a key position but he now feels the Merseysiders will prioritise a different type of centre-back, with the focus shifting to finding Konate’s replacement:

“I’ve actually got a theory on Marc Guehi. I think Liverpool should have done a deal, and it’s blown up in their face. But when Liverpool were going to do the deal for Marc Guehi, it wasn’t to come in and replace Konate, it was to provide competition, and fight for a place.”

“I think with the form of Konate, I think Liverpool should be looking for someone to replace Konate and become first-choice, and that’s different. Marc Guehi is a very good centre-back, but he’s not as big as Konate. Liverpool have had a problem this season with set-pieces and long throws, so I’d find it strange to bring in a centre-back smaller than the one you’ve got.”

“In general play, I’m sure he will perform better than Konate, but I don’t know if Liverpool’s focus will change to someone who is six foot three, six foot four, maybe a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk. I’m intrigued, I’m just thinking would Guehi replace Konate rather than provide competition, but I think Liverpool need two centre-backs.”

Are Liverpool still interested in Guehi?

While Carragher suggests that the club’s priorities have changed, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano says that the Merseyside club are still in the mix to snap up the defender on a free transfer next summer.

However, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also very keen on Guehi, while Bayern Munich have started to push hard, having already had two meetings with his agent.

Are there any other centre-half targets?

Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck has been mentioned as a potential option, although many see the German as Virgil van Dijk’s successor.

There is believed to be a longstanding interest in Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez as well, while there have been links with Rennes youngster Jeremy Jacquet.
