Liverpool are firmly on the market for an eventual Mo Salah replacement

Liverpool are willing to trigger a significant release clause in order to sign a long-standing transfer target in 2026, according to reports.

Despite spending more than £300 million on new attackers over the summer, the Reds are said to be looking to poach another winger. Particularly a player who is viewed as a potential long-term successor to Mohamed Salah.

Nico Williams is believed to have been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time now and according to a new update, they are willing to pay what it takes in order to get a deal over the line.

Liverpool ‘preparing’ £83 million offer for Nico Williams

Fichajes has reported that Liverpool remain interested in the Athletic Bilbao star and are ‘preparing’ to trigger his €95 million (£83m) release clause.

Williams had been linked with La Liga rivals Barcelona over the summer but opted to remain with Athletic. This was a decision that has now been plunged into doubt, as the winger’s situation is now ‘dangerously uncertain’.

Williams reportedly feels ‘betrayed by the promises of a winning project this season’. After finishing fourth in the Spanish league last season, Athletic are now struggling on al fronts. The Bilbao side are currently seventh in the La Liga standings, with three defeats in their last five games.

They’re also headed for an early exit from the Champions League unless their luck seriously improves. With just two games left of the league phase, Athletic are outside the play-off spots in 28th, with only five points on the board.

Nico Williams ‘seriously considering’ a Premier League switch

Athletic’s struggles this season have seriously impacted Williams. The report claims that their lacklustre form has ‘dealt a blow to his aspirations’ and he is now weighing up his options for his next career move.

The 23-year-old is said to be ‘seriously considering’ a move to the Premier League amid the disappointing landscape at Athletic right now. Williams has three goals and three assists in all competitions so far this season, which is short of the usual expectations of a forward of his calibre.

Injury has played a part in his performances this term but if Athletic’s struggles are weighing as heavy on him as the Spanish media says, then a 2026 switch-up could well be on the cards. Williams is a left-winger by trade but can also play on the right, which is why he has been an attractive target for Liverpool over the years.

The Reds are eager to sign a long-term replacement for Salah now more than ever. The Egyptian’s form this season has struggled compared to his usual electric performances, leading the club to heavily pursue a talented winger who will eventually take over from the legendary Salah.

Liverpool have also been linked with Real Madrid’s Rodrygo both historically and recently. However, contrasting reports continue to bounce around the Brazilian’s situation and it’s unclear whether he will actually leave the Spanish capital any time soon or not.
