Julio Baptista had a one-year loan spell at Arsenal in the 2006/07 campaign, switching from Real Madrid for the campaign.
The move worked out well, as the Brazilian scored ten times and racked up three assists. He also made multiple Premier League starts under Arsene Wenger, often becoming the Gunners’ first-choice striker.
Baptista has now spoken to Italy’s FanPage about his time at Arsenal.
He was specifically asked about a League Cup game against Liverpool, during wich he scored four times in a 6-3 win.
“I remember my experience there fondly. Met champions like Henry, Fàbregas, Van Persie, Ljungberg, Gilberto Silva, and worked with Arsène Wenger, a special coach from whom I learned a lot.
“I can’t help but remember the great match we played at Anfield against Liverpool, winning 6-3. A thrilling match in which I scored four goals and even missed a penalty!”
Baptista said even Liverpool fans applauded him after the game. This left quite an impact on him and he has no regrets about how the stint was.
“It was incredible. It was the first time I left a stadium being applauded by rival fans; that experience undoubtedly left a profound mark on me.”
The Brazilian also had praise for Arsene Wenger and his man-management abilities.
“Wenger has always given me nothing but good advice. He has a special sensitivity and truly understands what’s going on inside a player. A great manager and an even better person.”
While Baptista never played over 100 games for any club in his career, he clearly enjoyed his time at Arsenal.
He returned to Real Madrid after the loan but his time at Emirates helped him attract AS Roma. He played 77 times for the Giallorossi and it was one of the best spells of his career.
