Boston Celtics have a clear stance on trades

Jayson Tatum-less Celtics are open to making in-season trades if the deals strengthen their roster and make sense financially.

Despite losing Jayson Tatum to an Achilles tear last spring and seeing much of their frontcourt rotation depart in the offseason, the Boston Celtics have managed to remain in the top five of the Eastern Conference through their first 26 games.

Instead of sliding down the standings, Boston has stayed competitive, giving team president Brad Stevens some flexibility as the February 5 trade deadline approaches.

"We will not put a ceiling on this group," Stevens said, via The Athletic's Jay King. "If it makes sense for us to look for things that can help us, we certainly will. But it all has to be within good deals and within the ultimate goal."

Currently operating above the luxury tax, a trade that sheds salary could also offer the team some financial relief.

Stevens acknowledged that most teams around the league are still in an evaluation period.

If Boston does look to make an addition, the frontcourt would be the most logical area to target, according to Jay King. Players like Anfernee Simons, who is on an expiring $27.7 million contract, could be viewed as assets.

Through 26 games, the Celtics are 15-11, fueled by strong performances from Jaylen Brown.
