Cumbrian keeper is staying at Man City, insists Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has ruled out a Manchester City departure for Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford.

The Greysouthen star has been the subject of speculation after losing his first-team place to Italian No1 Gianluigi Donnarumma.

But City boss Guardiola, who recalled Trafford for Wednesday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Brentford, has underlined his faith in the 23-year-old.

Asked if Trafford would stay with City in January, Guardiola [said](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/47323545/pep-guardiola-james-trafford-exit-man-city-january?ref=ed_direct): “Absolutely.

"He's an incredible keeper. Unfortunately for him Gianluigi is the first-choice keeper but he is an incredible keeper.

"I know the position of the keeper is so special and during the year in one game you can change.

"The keeper position is special. He is with us and will be with us this season and after we will see what happens."

Trafford rejoined Manchester City from Burnley in the summer and started the season in goal for the Premier League club.

But City’s move for Donnarumma then saw the Cumbrian relegated to the bench – triggering speculation about his immediate future.

Clubs such as Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have been reportedly showing interest in the former Carlisle United academy player.

Guardiola, though, says he will look to reward Trafford’s patience when he can.

"He is a goalkeeper, James cannot play left-back," added Guardiola.

"At the moment we have a keeper in Gigio playing in that position but he is a top keeper, there is no doubt about that. I am really pleased he \[Trafford\] can play two more games.

"He played in the Champions League and I am a guy who wants to give opportunities to everyone."

Trafford's clean sheet against Brentford helped City reach the League Cup semi-finals, where they will face holders Newcastle United.

The other semi-final will see Chelsea take on Arsenal or Crystal Palace.
