Former Liverpool man Xabi Alonso has endured a mixed start to his time at Real Madrid with Fabrizio Romano providing a new update. He arrived in the Spanish capital with serious credentials having led Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023/24 alongside the German Cup.
The Spanish tactician was precisely the kind of visionary coach a club like Real Madrid thought it needed. Yet just seven months into his tenure, that honeymoon period has evaporated entirely, leaving him teetering on the brink of sacking. Real Madrid have only 4 wins in their last 10 matches and have collapsed in La Liga now trailing Barcelona by four points after initially leading the table.
Cracks already started to show in a humiliating 5–2 derby defeat to Atlético Madrid in September. Criticism continued after the 1–0 Champions League loss to his former admirers, Liverpool, and a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City last week left the Bernabéu crowd booing. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, not all his lost for Alonso, with the former Liverpool man allowed the next run of games and the Spanish Super Cup (starting 7 January 2026) to prove himself:
“Xabi Alonso won the last two games, and this is for sure helping the pressure around him. At the same time, the next games will still be important.”
“The position at the moment is under control, but still not 100% safe. The next games, Sevilla, Real Betis, and then – really important – the Spanish Super Cup. Those moments will be very important to decide what Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso will do in the future.”
“He will have the opportunity to keep his job, to keep doing his best for Real Madrid, but the next two games in La Liga and the Super Cup is important to see how the team reacts in top games.”
“So far this season, apart from El Clasico, in some big games like Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, and Manchester City… was not the best moments for Real Madrid. So those will be the crucial moments for Xabi Alonso.”
