Jamie Carragher has addressed speculation over whether Liverpool could look to sell Mohamed Salah in the January transfer window. Salah voiced his frustration at being left on the bench during the Reds’ 3-3 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road, hinting at a possible January exit.
Following the interview, Salah was omitted from Liverpool’s Champions League trip to Inter Milan but returned to action with an impressive performance against Brighton. While his upcoming Africa Cup of Nations duty may serve as a cooling-off period, Carragher believes Salah will need to refocus and earn his place upon his return.
The Egyptian forward signed a two-year contract extension in April. Since arriving from Roma in 2017, Salah has made 421 appearances for the club, winning several major trophies, four Golden Boots and three PFA Player of the Year awards. Carragher has also suggested that Salah would have limited options if he were to leave Anfield in the near future, adding further context to the uncertainty surrounding the forward’s future.
“He wouldn’t be leaving to go to Barcelona or Real Madrid,” Carragher said on The Overlap podcast. “We are talking about the Saudi league. Would you rather play every week in the Saudi league or 50 percent of the games from now until the end of the season? Liverpool have had a terrible season, but could have an outside chance of getting to the semifinal or final of the Champions League, or playing in an FA Cup final. If that’s not enough for him, go and play in Saudi Arabia, where nobody cares.
He added: “I think if Liverpool get the money that they want, they will probably will. I think they’ll think they don’t want the hassle. I’d love him to stay and I think he can have a better send-off and have an impact between now and the end of the season.”
