Michelle Agyemang wins BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year

Arsenal striker Michelle Agyemang has won the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year. The 19-year-old came to national attention during the summer as the Lionesses retained the European Championship trophy in Switzerland.

Agyemang broke into the squad shortly before the tournament, scoring 41 seconds into her debut against Belgium and Sarina Wiegman included her in the final squad ahead of Fran Kirby. Agyemang spent last season on loan at Brighton in the WSL.

The teenager scored crucial late equalisers against Italy and Sweden in the knockout stages to help England to the trophy. Agyemang again joined Brighton on loan for this season but sadly ruptured her ACL playing for England in October.

Agyemang is the second Arsenal player to win the award after Theo Walcott in 2006. Congratulations Michelle! Elsewhere, Chloe Kelly was nominated for the main prize but with Hannah Hampton also on the five person shortlist, the vote was split between the two Lionesses and neither made the top three.
