‘Alexander Isak could be sold by Liverpool at the end of the season’ Hamann

Didi Hamann has been talking about the Alexander Isak situation at Liverpool.

The Sweden international having gone on strike at Newcastle United across the summer, in order to try and force his way out of St James’ Park and get his dream move to Anfield (and £10million a year in wages…).

Newcastle United eventually banking £130million on deadline day, as Alexander Isak finally got what he wanted.

As for whether Liverpool got what they wanted, is still very much an unknown.

The Alexander Isak at Anfield is looking a pale imitation of what he showed at St James’ Park.

After scoring 48 goals across the last two seasons for Newcastle United, as we come to the halfway point of this 2025/26 season, Alexander Isak has only managed two goals so far. One of those two goals came against second tier Southampton in the Carabao Cup.

Didi Hamann believes that; “… if things don’t pick up for Alexander Isak come March or April, Liverpool will probably have discussions to sell him to a club like Barcelona in the summer.”

The former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder also thinks that how many goals Hugo Ekitike scores, will be a major factor in whether the scousers end up trying to sell Alexander Isak in the summer.

Whilst Alexander Isak has been so poor, Hugo Ekitike has hit the ground running and already scored ten goals.

Hamann saying that if the French striker continues his great form, then he will be the centre-forward for Liverpool and to get any kind of regular football, Isak would be forced to accept he’d have to play out wide, rather than be the main man.

If Liverpool do put Alexander Isak up for sale in six months time, Didi Hamann claims; “There will be plenty of takers for Alexander Isak because he has shown his ability at Newcastle United.”

I think a fair bit to unwrap there, especially when it comes to which clubs would be interested in Alexander Isak AND at what price, if he was put up for sale this summer?

When you smash all Premier League records and pay £130m for a player AND give hm £10million a season wages on a six year contract, which clubs could even afford to take him on?

The Premier League dominates football finances these days across Europe and indeed the World. So it would mainly be clubs in England who could potentially afford Alexander Isak but none of them would pay anything like the £130million Liverpool shelled out, especially taking on his wages as well. Would Liverpool even consider selling Isak to a Premier League rival, just in case he did turn his form around? For these reasons and others, I can’t see any chance of the Sweden striker moving to another Premier League club.

Didi Hamann talks of Liverpool selling Alexander Isak to, “…a club like Barcelona”, in the summer. The former player apparently totally unaware that Barcelona have become a total financial mess in recent times, across these last three seasons they have only spent around £100m in total. So suddenly giving Liverpool most of their £130m back AND taking on Isak’s wages, sounds a ‘little’ unlikely.

With Mbappe and others at Real Madrid, you would maybe only be left with PSG as a possibility in terms of where Alexander Isak could potentially go and afford him, but they have loads of great attacking players and seem to have rowed back from their past policy of paying huge £100m+ transfers for the likes of Neymar.

An interesting situation potentially set to develop with Liverpool and Alexander Isak as we head towards the end of the season, with both parties looking back at last summer and wondering if the shameful way both club and player acted in forcing the transfer was all really worth it…
