Why is there only one Premier League game on Sunday?

Just one Premier League match will be played on Sunday due to fixture congestion caused byCrystal Palace's run in cup competitions.

Eight games will now take place on Saturday, with one scheduled for Sunday and another for Monday.

The final round of league phase fixtures took place on Thursday, with Palace drawing 2-2 against Finnish side KuPS.

Oliver Glasner's side had requested to play the European tie a day earlier, but it was rejected by Uefa on the grounds that moving it would jeopardise the integrity of the competition.

It meant Palace's EFL Cup quarter-final against Arsenal had to be pushed back a week to Tuesday, 23 December.

Everton's home match against the Gunners and Palace's trip to Leeds were both originally selected to be Sunday matches shown on Sky Sports. But the Premier League agreed to move both fixtures to Saturday following requests from the London clubs.

Both matches will remain on television but will kick-off simultaneously at 20:00 GMT.

"Player welfare is a priority for the Premier League, and we have therefore granted requests from Arsenal and Crystal Palace to move their respective fixtures," a Premier League statement said.

"This comes after the scheduling of matches from other competitions around Premier League fixtures without adequate player recovery time.

"This is also further evidence of the impact the expanded Uefa competitions have on the domestic fixture calendar," they added.
