Sunderland team news update ahead of Brighton clash

Sunderland Heaven Branch are inviting SAFC supporters to take part in a special memorial tribute at the upcoming Manchester City game.

Sunderland fans attending the upcoming Manchester City fixture on January 1 are being asked to take part in a unique and deeply moving tribute.

Sunderland Heaven Branch are organising the tribute to loved ones who have passed away - whether that be fans, former players or club staff - over the past eight years. Joanne Youngson, of the Heaven Branch thanked the club for their understanding and support with this. The Heaven Branch was founded in 2021 by friends and devoted Sunderland supporters, Joanne and Billy Wright.

Joanne told the Echo: “The tribute is being organised by the Heaven Branch and is inspired by the powerful display carried out by Union Berlin supporters on their return to the Bundesliga. It is intended to honour loved ones who have passed away during the eight years since the club last competed in the Premier League.

“During a planned minute of applause shortly before kick-off, fans will be invited to hold aloft photographs of loved ones who would have been following the club’s remarkable recent journey and return to the Premier League, but who are sadly no longer with us. The applause will involve the entire stadium, including the players, creating a shared moment of remembrance and unity.

“Supporters wishing to take part are encouraged to bring a photograph of their loved one to the game. Pictures can be any size. The moment to raise them will be clearly signposted in the minutes before kick-off, during the stadium-wide minute of applause.”

The Echo has launched a new WhatsApp SAFC channel to bring the latest news, analysis and team & injury updates directly to your phone.Simply click this link to join our SAFC WhatsApp channel.

Sunderland fans are also asked to assist if they arrive at their seats and find a photograph already placed there. These images represent loved ones whose families are unable to attend the game in person.

Joanne added: “By holding up a picture, supporters will be helping ensure that every individual is remembered and honoured on the day.”

So far, photographs have been sent in from across the UK and beyond, including from as far afield as Australia and the Isle of Wight and they represent supporters, club staff, and families of former players, all united in remembering those who shared a love for the club.

Joanne added: “This tribute is intended as a powerful reminder that while the club celebrates its return to the Premier League and recent successes, it does so carrying the memories of those who supported the lads but are no longer here to witness it. Supporters are encouraged to take part and help make January 1st a fitting and unforgettable moment of remembrance.”
