Matchday Memories: On This Day 1992 – See Bobby’s Boys Roast The Reds As Gould Junior Debuts

On this day (19th December) in 1992 the ‘Mighty Reds’ of Liverpool came to Highfield Road in a Premier League fixture against the Super Sky Blues managed by former player, then gaffer Bobby Gould. Bobby’s son Jonathan Gould (now also a CCFPA member) made his Sky Blue debut in goal in this fantastic game. The home team ended with a sensational 5-1 victory which didn’t look likely after the Reds had the best of the first half in front of 19,847 fans.

Nevertheless City went into the break a goal to the good from a Brian Borrows penalty scored eight minutes before the break which had been awarded for Jamie Redknapp‘s foul on (now CCFPA member) Lee Hurst in the penalty box. ‘Buggsy’ followed up with a great strike for City’s second goal after 54 minutes to make it 2-0, a fine birthday present for the veteran full back (who would be 32 the following day). Then, two other Association members now combined just after the hour mark to make it 3-0! Our Scottish forward Kevin Gallacher scampered in to nick a third in a goal made by Kevin’s now fellow CCFPA member Robert Rosario!

Then Jamie Rednapp took a hand scoring with a screamer after 64 minutes and then picking up a second yellow for a foul on ‘Gally’ and getting himself sent off after 68 minutes. Liverpool‘s ten men were than made to suffer further as terrace hero Micky Quinn scored a quick-fire brace on 71 and 74 minutes to complete the humiliation. This was Sumo’s eighth goal in five consecutive games!

City had run riot in the second half in which former CCFPA chairman and club historian Jim Brown suggested was arguably the best Sky Blues 45 minutes of the decade!

A wonderful gallery of photos of the game from the Coventry Telegraph website can be found here. The ‘Match of the Day’ cameras were also there so, courtesy of former CCFPA committee member Dean Nelson***,***just click on the image below to see the highlights:-

Of course, future Sky Blues Mike Marsh and Don Hutchison (both now CCFPA members) featured in the well beaten Reds side on this day!

The Reds got a full measure of revenge in the Premier League return at Anfield in mid April tonking the Sky Blues by four clear goals! By the end of the season the Sky Blues found themselves (at the end of a closely fought struggle at the bottom of the Premier League) in a decent fifteenth spot five places (but only three points) above the drop. That downwards journey was taken by Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and bottom club Nottingham Forest.

The Reds had a poor season for them but finished sixth a full 25 points behind Champions Manchester United. Aston Villa were runners up ten points behind the Red Devils.
