Another former Liverpool man has officially retired from football, adding to a growing list of ex-Redmen to retire this year.
Reds icon Pepe Reina put down the gloves at age of 42 earlier this year, finishing his career at Como in Serie A.
Fan favourite Joe Allen also retired at the end of last season, and is now part of Victor Matos’ backroom team at Swansea City.
And now former Liverpool defender Steven Caulker has called time on his career, announcing the decision on LinkedIn on Friday. His time at Anfield was brief, with just four senior appearances.
Caulker spent time in the Turkish Süper Lig with Alanyaspor and Fenerbahçe, captained Sierra Leone at the Africa Cup of Nations, and most recently took on a unique challenge as a player-coach for Stjarnan FC in Iceland.
Now, after a career that has taken him across the globe, the former England international has officially announced his retirement from professional football. Taking to LinkedIn to share the news, Caulker reflected on a rollercoaster 17-year journey that saw him represent 17 different clubs:
“It’s time to announce my official retirement from my playing career.
“17 seasons, 17 teams, and 5 different countries.”
“I had a good taste of Premier League football, played and scored for England, captained Sierra Leone, played in the Olympics, spent time as a player-coach, and met some incredible people along the way.”
“Along with the highs, there have been some serious lows. It’s been a rollercoaster, to say the least. Today, I am very grateful for having experienced both sides of the coin, as it has helped me grow as a person.”
“I would like to take this moment to thank everybody who has supported me along the way: family, friends, coaches, and fans.”
“I look forward to now focusing full-time on my coaching and using all my experiences to help guide the next generation.”
“Let’s see what 2026 has in store.”
We wish Steven Caulker all the best in his new journey as a coach.”
