Liverpool have once again been linked with Gabriel Mec, with confirmation from Brazil that the Premier League club continue to track the Grêmio teenager ahead of the January transfer window. Trivela revealed the update and local outlet Zero Hora confirmed.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has appeared on Liverpool’s radar for some time. However, the latest reports indicate renewed internal monitoring as European clubs prepare for the next market.
Internal comparison with Vinícius Jr
The story says Liverpool’s recruitment analysts have internally compared Mec’s characteristics to those of Vinícius Júnior.
The assessment focuses on pace, direct running and attacking instinct. At the same time, the club recognise that Mec remains at an early stage of development.
Accepted offer and player’s decision
Mec recently addressed his transfer situation in an interview with ESPN. He revealed that Grêmio had accepted a proposal from Shakhtar Donetsk, reportedly close to €15m. Still, the move collapsed after the player chose not to proceed.
“To be honest, Grêmio’s board accepted the proposal,” Mec explained. “They tried to talk to us, but I spoke with my family, with the people who manage my career, my agent, and we felt it was better not to go.”
The teenager said timing influenced the decision.“It is a very good club, one that develops players and gives opportunities. Still, we thought it was better not to go now. I still have the dream of playing more for Grêmio. I can help this club a lot.”
Focus remains on Grêmio
Chelsea also held talks and monitored the player during that period, although negotiations did not lead to an agreement.
For now, Mec insists that his priorities remain unchanged. “The future depends on the present. If I keep getting good results and working properly, clubs will keep watching. I am very focused on Grêmio. I want to make my history here. I have been at the club since I was nine years old.”
With Liverpool again mentioned so close to January, his situation remains one to watch.
