Real Madrid: Kylian Mbappe can break 12-year Cristiano Ronaldo record and make history

Kylian Mbappe moved one goal away from smashing a long-standing Cristiano Ronaldo record at Real Madrid after his midweek brace against Talavera.

The Frenchman has put himself firmly in the conversation for the 2026 Ballon d'Or already after an incredible end to this year. In fact, Mbappe has hit new heights since the start of 2025 and has become the talisman he was expected to be at the Bernabeu.

Goalscoring has come naturally to the man who could well be the best player in world football right now. His two efforts against Talavera were his 58th and 59th club goals of the calendar year so far. Including international goals, that puts him ninth on the list of players with the most goals in a calendar year in football history.

Real Madrid's players and manager Xabi Alonso have chosen new luxury cars to drive - and they're certainly not cheap.

Ballon d'Or Contender Mbappe Set to Smash Real Madrid Record

Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe

Perhaps the biggest star in the famous white shirt since Ronaldo, the ex-PSG superstar looks set to break one of his idol's many records at the Spanish club. Back in 2013, at his goalscoring best, Ronaldo set a new club record for the most goals in a calendar year (59).

Mbappe needs just one more to equal that tally, but has only one more game to break the record outright. That chance will come in Los Blancos' final La Liga match before the winter break against Sevilla on Saturday.

If he wants to seal his place in the history books for the Spanish giants, Real Madrid's number 10 will need to be on top form for Xabi Alonso's side. It's been a tough season for the club at times, but Mbappe has already notched 28 goals in all competitions since the start of the 2025/26 campaign.

Xabi Alonso Hails 'Decisive' Mbappe

Speaking after Mbappe's telling contribution in the Copa del Rey victory this week, his manager was full of praise for the talismanic forward. Alonso hailed his striker as 'decisive' and defended his decision to play Mbappe for as long as he did against lower league opposition:

"[Mbappe] was decisive with his goals.

Kylian always has that knack for scoring. The third goal was key, it was very important, and that's why we kept him on the field. Mission accomplished, and on to the next one."

A home tie against ninth-placed Sevilla won't be easy to navigate, but the Spaniard will need the very best version of his goal-hungry centre-forward to try and keep pace with Barcelona at the top of the table. Los Blancos currently trail Hansi Flick's side by four points.
