When Liverpool smashed their transfer record to bring Alexander Isak to Anfield for £125 million, the expectation was instant impact. Instead, the Swedish striker has struggled to find his rhythm in Arne Slot’s system.

At the time, the “Isak Saga” consumed every column inch, a drawn-out negotiation that promised to be the catalyst for Liverpool’s successful title defence. Yet, as we approach Christmas, that fervor feels like a distant memory, replaced by the stark reality of a disjointed start for the Swede.

Nearly four months into his Liverpool career, Isak has managed just one solitary Premier League goal—a finish against West Ham in a 2-0 win.

Unfortunately, his time on Merseyside has been defined less by goals and more by the treatment table. A recurring groin issue has limited the 26-year-old to just 12 appearances.

But speaking to Swedish outlet Aftonbladet, Isak has admitted that he does not really have the answer as to why he and Liverpool have failed to meet expectations so far this term:

“No, I don’t think so. I don’t really have the answer to that. The team – of course it has been slow, but that’s how it is in football. There are always teams that fly, and then it goes slower for others. It is important to turn it around.”

“And for my part too… It’s not the first time in my career that I’ve gone through a period like this, or I’m in bad shape. That’s how a football career works, it’s just something you have to fight your way out of.”

“I’ve had tougher periods in every team I’ve been in, except for the loan in Holland (Willem II). In Dortmund, in Spain, in Newcastle and here. I’m not too focused on just that, on where it’s been the toughest. I see it as experiences that hopefully make me come out on the other side as a better person and player.”

Then speaking on why he decided to join Liverpool, the 26-year-old said:

“[Liverpool’s interest] was the most interesting thing for me,” Isak said.

“I felt quite early on that this was where I wanted to go. An overall picture. The club’s history, where the club is today and the next step it will take.”
