Former NBA referee Eric Lewis, who retired in 2023 after violating the league’s social media policy, is set to return to officiating through the G League.
After stepping away from the NBA in 2023, former referee Eric Lewis is on track for a potential comeback through the G League.
Lewis, who retired after 19 seasons due to a social media violation, has been reinstated into the league’s officiating program and is scheduled to work a G League Showcase game Friday between the Osceola Magic and Noblesville Boom in Orlando.
Lewis retired in August 2023 following an NBA investigation into a Twitter account linked to him. While he had been cleared of partial wrongdoing, the league expressed concern over posts related to officiating.
Since then, Lewis has completed stress management counseling and social media training to regain eligibility.
“I got chill bumps right now thinking about it,” Lewis said per ESPN. “I’m excited about earning people’s trust back, getting back to the work and getting back to the game… Get back to that normalcy and familiarity with the top players in the world.”
NBA President of League Operations Byron Spruell confirmed that the league conducted a thorough review before allowing Lewis to return through the G League.
