Houston Rockets close to buying WNBA team

The Houston Rockets are in advanced talks to purchase and potentially relocate the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun to Houston.

Houston Rockets are reportedly in advanced discussions with the Connecticut Sun over the potential purchase and relocation of the WNBA team, per ESPN.

The talks have been described as “positive,” with Rockets ownership reportedly improving their offer to a level the Sun could find acceptable.

While the two sides have discussed a formal offer, no exclusivity agreement has been signed, and no final decision has been made on the team’s future. The WNBA had previously signaled a strong interest in returning to Houston.

During the league’s three-team expansion announcement in June, commissioner Cathy Engelbert specifically mentioned Houston and Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta as “up next” for potential WNBA growth.

The Sun have been owned by the Mohegan tribe since 2003, after relocating the team from Orlando, Florida. A sale to Rockets ownership would continue the trend of WNBA teams being owned by NBA franchises.

The Sun first began exploring investment options more than a year ago, initially looking at limited partnership opportunities to help fund infrastructure improvements.
