It has not been an easy journey for Alvaro Cortes at FC Barcelona. Having arrived at the club as a 16-year-old in 2021, when he had already broken into the first-team setup at Real Zaragoza, the youngster has had to bide his time.

Following a tricky start with Juvenil B, the young defender had to leave on loan and play for Damm for a year to get things back on track.

Upon returning in 2023, he became a regular starter for Barça’s Juvenil A team and even trained with the first team under Xavi Hernandez.

Cortes’ progression has continued on a positive trajectory ever since, with the 20-year-old now the captain of Barça Atletic under Juliano Belletti and waiting for his first-team shot.

However, with his contract expiring in the summer of 2027, Alvaro Cortes is starting to attract interest from clubs from within Spain and outside.

Indeed, according to Matteo Moretto (via solofichajes123), Getafe in La Liga, along with Dutch giants AFC Ajax and Portuguese bigwigs SL Benfica are interested in the 20-year-old defender and keeping tabs on his situation at Barcelona.

Meanwhile, the report states that Barcelona are intent on renewing Cortes’ contract, which has 18 months left on it.

However, the young centre-half is seeking guarantees from the club about his chances with the first team before deciding on whether to commit to a new deal or not.

An alternate report from SPORT states that Cortes is attracting a large number of offers to leave on loan in the winter transfer window, but Barcelona’s intention is to try to keep him.

The Catalans have maximum confidence in his potential, and the main objective is to secure a contract renewal next summer.

The report suggests that the 20-year-old defender already had proposals to leave last summer, including one from Gerard Pique’s club, Andorra.

However, Inigo Martinez’s departure put a stop to any potential exit, although the youngster has not been called up for any games by Hansi Flick yet.

Despite that, Barcelona’s intention remains to renew Cortes’ contract, but the centre-back wants assurances over his first-team chances before committing.
