Manchester City Extend Defender’s Contract

Rebecca Knaak has signed a new deal with Manchester City that will keep her at the club until the summer of 2028. City are keen to secure their defensive options, with Alex Greenwood still recovering from injury and recent updates confirming that Naomi Layzell will also be sidelined for a significant period.

Knaak joined Manchester City in January 2025 and has featured in 16 matches for the club so far. The German defender quickly established herself in City’s backline, and her strong performances earned her a call-up to the German national team. In addition to her defensive qualities, Knaak has also contributed in attack, scoring five goals since arriving in Manchester.

What Rebecca Knaak had to say

“It feels amazing [to sign a new contract]. It’s been a year, I could say, but I’m super happy to be here and to be a part of this club and team. I could say it feels like home,” she declared.

“I’m very excited to stay here for a little longer. I guess it’s a combination of a lot of things, obviously the football part first. I love playing for City, it’s amazing, the team is great, I’ve learned so much here and also the culture, the environment.

“This culture is very nice and it’s a big, massive club but still I feel very included and appreciated. That’s something that makes me feel like home.”

Squad update by head coach Jegelrtz

Head coach Andrée Jeglertz confirmed that Aoiba Fujino is still being assessed by the medical staff. “She has been assessed during the week and she is a question mark for the game on Sunday. That’s all I can say at the moment,” he said.

Manchester City face West Ham United in the Women’s League Cup on Sunday, December 21. The Hammers will be without head coach Rehanne Skinner, who was recently dismissed by the club. However, Jeglertz is not placing too much emphasis on that ahead of the fixture.

“We are not thinking that much about that. We’ll see on Sunday and we are preparing for how we think West Ham are going to approach the game and what they’ve done before. They did a good game here against us in November. I am sure they will do everything they can to make it a difficult game for us.”

Manchester City are currently leading the WSL table going into the winter break.
