Liverpool are ready to pursue new big name targets once the January transfer window opens
Liverpool are expected to spend more cash in the new year as they push to turn their season around.
Things seemed to have settled a little at Anfield following the Reds’ recent consecutive wins in the Champions League and Premier League. However, they still have significant ground to make up after their nightmarish dip in form saw them fall drastically behind the leading pack in both competitions.
This has led the Reds to pursue a long-term successor at right-wing but they have also been considering new options on the left as well.
Liverpool preparing bid for Nico Williams
Fichajes reported earlier this week that Liverpool are preparing to trigger Nico Williams’ release clause at Athletic Bilbao. The Reds have been admirers of the Spanish international for time now and are looking to take their interest to the next level in 2026.
Despite the bulk of their money going on new attackers, Liverpool’s front line has struggled to impress as a whole this season. Hugo Ekitike has left a good impression on fans and pundits but Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz continue to come under fire.
Salah’s form is also significantly off his usual standard. So, with all of this stacked against them, Liverpool have looked a shadow of their usual dominant, fiery selves in front of goal.
With 26 Premier League goals on the board, Liverpool have more than the likes of Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, but are behind them in the table on points. A leaky defence has also played a big part in this, but it cannot be argued that Slot’s attack is far from firing at full capacity.
Nico Williams could help save Liverpool’s season
Since Luis Diaz’s departure over the summer, his absence has been heavily noticed. While Liverpool have recently drawn blanks in 3-0 defeats to Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, Diaz has 13 goalscoring contributions in as many Bundesliga games for new side Bayern Munich.
Williams could help bring similar attributes Diaz possesses back to Anfield. Both are known for their pace and dribbling ability and aren’t afraid to take a shot at goal. Liverpool look like they have been knocked of confidence recently and could use an injection of extra creativity and personality.
Williams finished last season with 11 goals and seven assists on his tally, as Athletic finished fourth in the table. Just like this season, he was often the man to turn a game around and become the difference between a draw and a loss, or a win and a draw. The Reds need more of that right now.
Salah was determined to get in on the action against Brighton, which fans will hope to see more of when he returns from AFCON. Signing a powerful figure on the left who can link-up with him similar to how Diaz and Sadio Mane used to could also bring the best back out of the Egyptian superstar.
