Barcelona stalwart receives major national honour for outstanding career

Robert Lewandowski’s influence continues to stretch far beyond the football pitch, and this week offered another clear reminder of his stature back home.

According to a report from SPORT, the Barcelona forward has been awarded the prestigious Bene Merito medal in Poland, a distinction reserved for individuals who have helped promote the country’s image on the international stage.

The recognition saw Lewandowski make a brief but meaningful trip to Warsaw on Thursday.

Despite the demands of a packed football calendar, the striker travelled to the Polish capital to attend the Totalizator Sportowy 70th Anniversary Gala, where he was one of the standout guests of the evening.

The event celebrated key figures who have contributed to Poland’s global reputation, and Lewandowski’s name was always going to feature prominently.

What is the Bene Merito medal?

Established in 2009, the award honours those who have acted as ambassadors for Poland abroad. In Lewandowski’s case, the justification was clear.

Through an extraordinary career at club and international level, the Barcelona striker has consistently placed Polish football, and Poland itself, firmly on the world map.

Lewandowski was being recognised not just for goals and trophies, but for the way he represents his country with professionalism and pride wherever he goes.

It was in that moment, reflecting on what the award meant to him, that the Barça forward shared his thoughts.

“An award like this is always something great and wonderful. I’m proud to be Polish, and I try to support our country abroad.

“It’s fantastic that Poland is developing and that we’re on the right track.

“It’s wonderful to be Polish and a great source of pride,” Lewandowski said after receiving the recognition.

Meanwhile, there was little time for celebrations to linger. True to his reputation, Lewandowski quickly shifted his focus back to football.

Shortly after the gala concluded, he boarded a flight back to Spain to rejoin Barcelona.

By Friday, he was already back on the training ground with his teammates, fully focused on the upcoming commitment against Villarreal.
