Harry Kane says Chelsea had a 'really smart' defender he absolutely hated playing against

Harry Kane has played against some of the best defenders in the world for Spurs, Bayern Munich, and England, but one Chelsea man stands above the rest when it comes to the toughest he has faced.

It has been amazing to see the levels Kane has reached since leaving Spurs.

Kane and Chelsea fans haven’t always gotten along, but now that he is plying his trade in the Bundesliga, we can root for the striker who will be leading the line for Thomas Tuchel next summer.

He has developed his game to the point where it looks like he has the tools to beat any defender thrown at him, but back in his Premier League days, it was a fellow countryman playing for Chelsea who he thinks had everything to his game.

Harry Kane names John Terry as his toughest opponent

While the two only briefly crossed paths in the Premier League, it was enough for Kane to know how good John Terry was.

The Chelsea captain was in the latter stages of his career as Kane was breaking out, but his quality allowed him to stay competitive even if he lost a yard or two.

Spurs’ current number nine Dominic Solanke asked Kane for his toughest opponent while filming with Sportbible.

He responded: “I’m gonna say John Terry was the toughest defender. Played against him a couple of times, really smart, really strong.

“He was good on the ball but most importantly, he was really intelligent as well which made it really tough.”

You can choose one Chelsea legend to play in Enzo Maresca’s team today. Who are you picking? 🤔

Kane broke into the first team at 21. At that time, Terry was 33, scoring five goals in the league on the way to a title.

Age did not seem to have much effect at all. So much so that he started over 30 games in the Championship at 36.

Chelsea haven’t had that kind of quality at the back for some time

Kane’s choice of Terry places him above Premier League greats like Virgil van Dijk or Ruben Dias, who he faced far more often.

Chelsea have been deprived of that kind of quality since. Thiago Silva is the closest, but he came to Stamford Bridge entering his late thirties.

Would you take Thiago Silva back at the club?

There is more promise now than last campaign, with Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana looking a much more assured duo. Josh Acheampong is also in Chelsea’s long-term plans.

And you have Levi Colwill who will come back into the side next season after injury.

It wouldn’t be surprising if none came close to giving opponents the nightmares Terry did, but they at least look like defenders worthy of the badge.
