Why Enzo Maresca should fear Eddie Howe ahead of Newcastle United vs Chelsea

Eddie Howe will hope history is on his side when Newcastle United face Chelsea.

The Magpies start the Premier League weekend six points behind Enzo Maresca’s side, with Alan Shearer backing them to halve that gap. Shearer is predicting a Newcastle United win, but that will be tough.

Eddie Howe’s side have been worryingly inconsistent this season, while they are still feeling the effects of their Tyne-Wear derby loss to Sunderland.

Newcastle will aim to continue their recovery against Chelsea in Saturday’s early kick-off, as they get set to face a team who are sitting pretty in fourth.

But while Chelsea have been much the better team this season, Newcastle United’s recent record in this fixture should give them hope.

Howe’s first win over Chelsea at home came courtesy of a Joe Willock screamer, while the following season saw the Magpies dismantle the Blues to win 4-1.

Newcastle then beat Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea twice last season on home soil, winning 2-0 on both occasions. The first was part of the Magpies’ incredible Carabao Cup journey, and the second was a pivotal victory in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

Howe will aim to make it five in a row on Saturday, as Newcastle United face Chelsea in their final game before Christmas.
