Chelsea’s crazy turnover in the squad in the last few years has made it very difficult for new players to settle in – even the old hands are 21 and have been there just a year or two.
As time passes, players are settling into these important roles though, and Enzo Fernandez is clearly one of them. It’s almost three years since he signed, and he’s a key figure on and off the pitch.

When speaking about Alejandro Garnacho, it was very clear that Enzo was having a big influence.
“As a player, you need the team around you,” Maresca responded when asked about Garnacho’s settling in after the winger scored twice in midweek.
“The connection between Enzo and Garna is good; they are both from Argentina and, most of the time, they play on the same side of the pitch. We know that Enzo is doing a lot for Garna [since he joined the club, and it’s the same for Facundo Buonanotte since he arrived, too.”
By the end of this season, others will be moving into the same category as they reach the three year mark at the club. Bit by bit, things are settling down as the churn slows. That should mean steady progress in terms of a coherent group forming as time goes by.
In other news…
Before discussing the attackers, Enzo Maresca had already talked about his teams’ defending, which has taken them to the top of the clean sheet table as we approach the halfway mark in the season.
Maresca also gave a Christmas rallying cry to the fans ahead of the 3 games in 11 days that are coming up, calling for unity and supporters to “trust the process.”
