Newcastle United v Chelsea team news: Lewis Hall is back in Newcastle’s side as one of four changes made by Eddie Howe.
The Magpies are looking to bounce back from the disappointment of last weekend’s 1-0 derby defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Since then they, like Chelsea, have progressed through to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.
A 2-1 win over Fulham at St James’ Park on Wednesday night extended Newcastle’s unbeaten run at home to nine matches in all competitions, winning eight.
Chelsea have finished exactly three points above Newcastle in each of the last two Premier League seasons and currently sit fourth in the table, six points ahead of United. But Newcastle have won each of their last four matches against Chelsea at St James’ Park, with an aggregate score of 9-1.
NUFC injury latest
But it will be a tough task for Eddie Howe and his side with the injuries starting to pile up, particularly in defence. Tino Livramento suffered a fresh knee injury against Fulham while Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles and Dan Burn remain out due to injury.
Goalkeeper Nick Pope and forward William Osula are also sidelined due to injury while The Magpies are boosted by the return of Lewis Hall against his former club.
Hall missed Wednesday’s match against Fulham with a hamstring issue but is back involved today. The 21-year-old joined Newcastle as a teenager initially on loan from Chelsea in a deal that later became permanent for £28million.
Despite being the most expensive teenager in the club’s history, Hall has proven himself as a key player in Howe’s side over the past two seasons.
Newcastle United confirmed line-up v Chelsea
Howe has made four changes from the side that beat Fulham with Hall, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade coming into the side in place of the injured Livramento as well as Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes and Yoane Wissa - who all drop to the bench.
NUFC XI v Chelsea: Ramsdale; Miley, Thiaw, Schar, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Ramsey; Murphy, Gordon, Woltemade
