Newcastle United appeared to have a clear penalty shout waved away during the Premier League clash with Chelsea at St. James' Park on Saturday.
Chelsea defender Trevor Chalobah charged into Anthony Gordon inside the box. The challenge sent the Newcastle player flying off the pitch towards the advertising boards, surrounded by home supporters screaming for a penalty.
Chalobah did not come close to touching the ball. Referee Andrew Madley waved the incident away. VAR looked at the clash but did not give anything.
TNT Sports pundit Ally McCoist believes it was a clear penalty. He said: "I think it's a penalty, I really do. I think he's trying to usher him out but he takes him out. It's a penalty, as simple as that. It's a stonewall penalty. I'm staggered at that."
He added: "It's not side-to-side. It's not side-to-side. He takes him out with his body. He's not, he's shielding the ball if he doesn't touch the player."
The decision was explained via the Premier League Match Centre X account as they stated: "The referee’s call of no penalty to Newcastle was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the contact from Chalobah on Gordon deemed to be side-to-side in a shielding action and the ball within playing distance."
Also speaking on TNT Sports, Joe Cole followed on by saying: "Too much aggression, I think we’ll be hearing from Eddie Howe after the game."
Newcastle were leading 2-1 before the incident in the penalty box. If a spot kick had been given, Nick Woltemade could have finished off a hat-trick having scored the opening two for the Magpies.
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Risky with bells on it! Trevoh Chalobah never got the ball, a shoulder challenge on Anthony Gordon. A big call for the referee to not give a penalty."
Just over 10-minutes after VAR waved away Newcastle's appeal, Chelsea equalised through Joao Pedro at the other end of the pitch.
Gordon's penalty claim wasn't the only VAR mishap during the game. Due to technical issues, the Semi-Automated Offside Technology wasn't available to check Woltemade's second goal.
It took longer than usual to check the goal as VAR had to manually draw the lines to determine the decision. The correct verdict was eventually reached with Newcastle going 2-0 up at the time.
