Newcastle United dropped yet more points in the Premier League after Chelsea pegged them back to an enthralling 2-2 draw in the Premier League.
Anthony Gordon led the charge in the first half, leading an intense Newcastle United press that left Chelsea scrambling.
Gordon teed up Nick Woltemade for a brace at St James’ Park to send Eddie Howe’s side into the break 2-0 up.
Reece James responded with a fine free-kick to bring the Blues back into it before a mistake from Malick Thiaw allowed Joao Pedro to level the scores.
It was another chaotic performance from Newcastle, who were brilliant in the first half but far too exposed after the break. Gordon’s performance was almost in vain.
Here’s how Geordie Boot Boys rated the players…
How bad was the decision not to give Anthony Gordon a penalty after he was brought down by Trevoh Chalobah?! 😡
Looked like a clear peno!

Aaron Ramsdale – 6
Still doesn’t fully convince. Could surely have done better for the James free-kick.

Lewis Miley – 8
Didn’t give Alejandro Garnacho an inch and so comfortable on the ball. With Miley playing like this, Newcastle do not appear to have many concerns about rushing Tino Livramento back into action.
Malick Thiaw – 7
Imposing and composed in equal measure, until the mistake. Seems harsh to criticise given how good he has been but should have done far better for the Pedro goal.
Fabian Schar – 7
Went close to another stunning goal in the first half and played well alongside Thiaw.
Lewis Hall – 8
Didn’t someone say he was injured? Another absolutely brilliant performance from Hall, who now looks like arguably the most important player in the squad.
Miley can cover Livramento. No one else can offer what Hall does to Howe. Oh, how Chelsea must regret selling him.
Bruno Guimaraes – 6
Held on to the ball far too long at times. Pressed well but the kind of performance Newcastle fans have become used to in this kind of game wasn’t there.
Sandro Tonali – 7
Worked his way out of a recent funk to deliver another strong performance.
Jacob Ramsey – 7
Played well against Fulham earlier this week and was even better here. Looked dangerous whenever he got the ball, and was crucial to winning it back for the Magpies too.
Final ball could have been better, however.
Jacob Murphy – 7
Some strange decision-making at times but generally always a threat. Quality was just off.
Nick Woltemade – 8
What a way to respond to scoring an own goal against Sunderland. There were flicks, tricks, brilliant hold-up play and – crucially – goals too.
The way in which he flicked in Gordon’s brilliant cross for the second goal was absolutely fantastic. Seems harsh to say, but should have scored more.
Which was better – Anthony Gordon’s cross or Nick Woltemade’s finish?!

Anthony Gordon – 9
An absolutely stunning performance. Gordon has faced a lot of criticism for a while now but his energy, industry and quality were all on show here. Crucial in setting up Woltemade.
That felt like his best performance since his breakout campaign back in 2023-24. Should have been given a penalty after a body check from Trevoh Chalobah.
