5 shots, 1 on target and 0/6 crosses: Chelsea’s inefficient winger frustrates fans

Alejandro Garnacho’s place in the starting team for Chelsea against Newcastle today was well earned, after two goals in midweek. But how did he get on? In the end, in a crazy and open game, he didn’t go enough with the opportunities he was afforded.

It wasn’t a disaster – but a truly top player would without doubt have influenced the game with a goal or assist.

Let’s run down the numbers – 25 of his 26 passes were completed. He created two chances. He had an xG of 0.33. He had 7 defensive contributions.

The key stat, and the one which will generate the most debate, is his shots. He managed an impressive 5 efforts, but only one was on target.

His crossing stats were even more nasty 0 of 6 found their man. He only attempted 2 dribbles, and only one of those two was successful.

It takes you back to the age old football question – do you want a player who gets into position and isn’t efficient, or one who doesn’t get into as many good positions but is more efficient?

For now, that left wing spot is his simply because Jamie Gittens isn’t playing well. The summer signing wasn’t even in the squad today. But if Garnacho wants to be a star for this team long term, he needs to shine in moments like this. It’s the difference between drawing and winning in most cases.

In other news…

Reece James changed the game with his free kick after half time, and he spoke to TNT Sport about how he had learned to be such an expert.

Enzo Maresca was in real trouble after that first half – his team simply didn’t turn up, and that’s on him as much as them. The fightback makes things look much more positive in hindsight.
