João Pedro secures comeback draw for Chelsea against Newcastle

Newcastle United and Chelsea battled to a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

Cole Palmer got the first chance to break the deadlock early on as he almost caught Aaron Ramsdale with a lob, but it went just over the bar.

Two minutes later, Woltemade gave the hosts the early lead after Anthony Gordon’s header from close range was saved by the legs of Robert Sanchez into the path of the German striker, who picked out the bottom corner.

Moments later, Alejandro Garnacho saw his long-range effort from the edge of the box float wide.

The Magpies had the chance to double their lead in the eighth minute after Gordon was found brilliantly inside the area by Jacob Murphy, but his effort was tipped over the bar by Sanchez, leaving the Blues furious at the referee for a foul on Malo Gusto in the build-up.

In the 20th minute, Woltemade doubled his tally and the Magpies’ advantage after he was picked out brilliantly by Gordon with an inswinging cross for the German to tap home his second. The goal was given after a lengthy VAR check.

Minutes later, Garnacho’s shot from the edge of the area struck Gordon’s hand, but the Blues’ penalty appeals were waved away by the referee.

The visitors thought they had reduced the deficit two minutes before the break, but Pedro Neto’s header struck his arm on the way in, so the goal didn’t stand.

Minutes later Woltemade could’ve got a hat-trick and the host’s third after Gordon sent in another inswinger cross to find the German, but his effort went just wide.

Four minutes after the restart, Reece James pulled one back for the Blues with a spectacular free-kick in off the post beyond a stretching Ramsdale.

Moments later, Newcastle appealed for a penalty after Trevoh Chalobah shoved Gordon to the ground in the area, but the referee wasn’t interested.

Just before the hour mark, the Blues had two chances to draw level. First, Neto laid it off for James at the edge of the area, but his first-time effort was blocked by Fabian Schar.

Neto’s first-time shot forced Ramsdale into a smart save to keep the Magpies in the game.

In the 66th minute, João Pedro drew the visitors level after he was found by Sanchez with a long ball; the Brazilian controlled it with his head and finished past Ramsdale.

Garnacho could’ve given Chelsea the lead minutes later, but he blasted his effort over from a tight angle.

At the other end, James made a last-ditch block to fend off Harvey Barnes’ goalscoring opportunity.

Moments later Caicedo had his sights on the goal, but his long-range effort flew just wide of the top corner.

Barnes had St James’ Park at the edge of their seat as they thought he had restored their lead, but the Englishman’s first shot at the back post from Guimaraes’ cross went agonisingly wide.

The Blues were caught on the break as Ramsdale released Anthony Elanga with a long throw; he drove at Cucurella, and his curler went wide off the bottom corner.

With the last action of the game, James brought down Barnes at the edge of the box; the host appealed for a red card, but after a lengthy VAR check, nothing was given, and Newcastle United dropped points again from a winning position.
