Rudi Voller has revealed what Florian Wirtz has made of his time at Liverpool so far.
The German footballing legend, who is the current DFB sporting director, has been speaking about Liverpool’s summer signing in a recent interview with the newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
Wirtz became one of the most talked about players on the planet this summer after he completed a big money move to Liverpool Football Club from Bayer Leverkusen.
The German midfielder had managed to score 57 times for the Bundesliga side, as well as registering 65 assists in 197 games for the club.
Numbers so impressive made him one of the hottest properties of the market going into the summer transfer window.
Liverpool swept aside the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich to get the man they wanted.
Much was said about the transfer, with excitement really building that Liverpool would go on to retain the Premier League title with ease.
However, the form shown in Germany has not yet been consistently replicated in England.
In a Reds shirt, Wirtz has not yet scored and has registered just three assists in 21 games across all competitions this season.
Because of this, even though there was initial excitement, some have now even questioning if Liverpool should’ve gone for Florian Wirtz at all.
He has been receiving far more praise from Germany than England though, and Voller was quick to show his support for the midfield maestro.
“Florian is essentially playing in Liverpool with the same self-confidence he displayed on the pitch in Leverkusen.”
Voller then went on to explain what is currently frustrating Florian Wirtz at Liverpool.
He said: “However, he’s not being sought out as often on the field as he was when he worse the Bayer Leverkusen jersey. But he has to earn that.”
“[The fee] is not the problem. That doesn’t bother Florian. He certainly thought it would be a little easier to find his place in the team.”
“The team functioned perfectly last season, then it underwent some changes. It takes time for everything to fall into place. Florian has to persevere through this.”
“I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until he’s truly settled in there and gives Liverpool what he wants to give and, above all, what he’s capable of giving.”
So it is clear that Wirtz wants to be given the ball more by his teammates, if that happens, he can impact the game more and keep his place in the team.
There was a period where he was dropped for a couple games this season, but he has fought his way back into the side and put in some great performances recently.
