Opinion: Weak Newcastle aren't going anywhere this season and Chelsea games proves it

The number of corners Newcastle United can turn this season appear to be running out.

Once again, Newcastle United were the architects of their downfall as they threw away their 12th and 13th points in this season’s Premier League campaign on Saturday.

Indeed, Newcastle drew 2-2 with Chelsea in an enthralling but frustrating game at St James’ Park.

Who was Newcastle United’s MOTM against Chelsea?!

Strange to say there are a few choices given the result!

For all the fire and fury with which Newcastle started, they left themselves overexposed, and the fact they ended up drawing was not all that surprising.

This has been a frustrating season for Newcastle and the Chelsea game summed it all up.

Newcastle United are too inconsistent for success this season

It would be dramatic to suggest there were no positives to take from the Chelsea game. Anthony Gordon was great, Nick Woltemade was back in the goals and both full-backs impressed.

However, given the nature of the campaign thus far, it’s hard to even get too excited by that.

The ease with which Chelsea played through Newcastle at times was, again, not even particularly alarming. Fans would have been seeing it all season.

AGREE OR DISAGREE: Eddie Howe hasn’t had it easy this season, but he should be doing much better

The fact it wasn’t a dreadful display arguably makes it all the worse. Newcastle played well, got themselves into a position where they’d surely have won the game in previous seasons, and still threw it away.

This is just their level now. There may be some bright moments to come but everything about their performances this season would suggest that there will be many steps back to come with those steps forward.

It’s hard not to take a sense of apathy about this season. Though the Carabao Cup and the Champions League haven’t been disasters, it’s difficult to see how this inconsistent team makes any more serious in-roads in either competition.

PIF’s expectation for Newcastle United this season is unlikely to be met

Back in November, Geordie Boot Boys were told of the expectations that owners PIF had of this season.

According to our sources, PIF believe Newcastle are good enough to finish in the top six in the Premier League table.

Right now, it’s hard to see how that possibly happens. That’s not to say it’s a complete disaster, just that it’s hard to back this team putting any sort of run together.

While the Premier League table is tight, nothing about this team convinces.

Sadly, this might end up being the worst season since the takeover.
