Arsenal went back to the top of the Premier League following their 1-0 win against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, thanks to a penalty from Viktor Gyokeres. The Gunners were the better team throughout and deserved the three points. However, Mikel Arteta was not satisfied with the chances his team missed and discussed this in the post-match press conference.

Following Arsenal’s 1-0 win, Arteta reflected on collecting a vital three points, discussing the decision to let Gyokeres take the penalty:
“They had a talk between the players and they gave it to Viktor and that was a good decision because he put the ball in the back of the net.”

“Enjoy the process of winning, we will have to go to difficult places,” said Arteta regarding being top at Christmas.
Reflecting on a close game, and his team’s missed chances, the Gunners boss said: “Yes but okay you hit the post twice with players who would normally put the ball in the back of the net.”
Improving in the Future
Discussing where he believes his team can improve, Arteta said: “You have to understand what the game requires. When to speed up, when to slow down. Sometimes when you need to be more aggressive, more incisive and we were sometimes more hesitant than we needed to be and we can improve on that.”

Being top at Christmas is a huge boost for Mikel Arteta and his team. However, they cannot rest on their laurels, with Manchester City and Aston Villa in hot pursuit. The Gunners have had some important players return from injury in recent weeks, such as Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus. They have more players due back, which will help their squad depth as the season continues into a busy start to 2026.
