Official: Barcelona confirm ACL injury to veteran defender; out of 3-4 months

FC Barcelona have issued an official medical update that confirms a worrying injury for FC Barcelona, with defender Andreas Christensen set to spend time on the sidelines.

The Danish centre-back suffered the problem during a training session, forcing the club to clarify his condition and the path forward.

The incident occurred during Saturday’s training, when Christensen made an awkward movement that resulted in an unfortunate twist of the knee.

Major setback for Barcelona

After undergoing medical tests in Barcelona on Sunday, the club released a statement explaining the extent of the injury and the decision taken by the medical staff.

In their official communication, Barcelona confirmed,

“The first team player, Andreas Christensen, has a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee as a result of an unfortunate twist of the knee in Saturday’s training session.”

Following further assessments, the club outlined the approach that will be taken to manage the injury.

Barcelona explained that surgery will not be required at this stage, opting instead for a more cautious route. As stated in the same release:

“After tests carried out on the player, a conservative course of treatment has been chosen.”

The club was careful not to place a fixed return date on the defender, stressing that everything will depend on how he responds to treatment and rehabilitation.

“The player’s recovery time will depend on his progress. We are with you, Andreas.”

What now for Barcelona?

Because the tear is partial rather than complete, early estimates, as per Mundo Deportivo, suggest Christensen could be sidelined for around three to four months, although Barcelona have deliberately avoided committing to a specific timeline.

The injury ruled him out of the trip to Villarreal and represents another physical setback in a difficult period for the defender, who missed most of last season with a long-term calf problem.

From a sporting perspective, the absence is not ideal for Hansi Flick, especially given the current lack of depth at centre-back.

At present, only Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia are natural options, with Jules Kounde being used at full-back.

This setback also comes while Ronald Araujo remains unavailable, with no clear return date yet set.
