Liverpool make bid for 'great' Championship teenager who has already wowed manager - report

Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool: Match Review

Liverpool and Manchester United are both said to be keen on the Sheffield Wednesday starlet.

According to our sister title the Sheffield Star, the Reds have lodged an offer for Sheffield Wednesday youngster Yisa Alao. It is suggested that Liverpool have made an offer in the mid-range of the hundreds of thousands.

The 17-year-old is still to sign a professional contract at Wednesday, who are currently in administration and have been docked 18 points. Alao has made one Championship appearance for Wednesday, which was in a 3-0 loss to Derby County, as well as two outings in the Carabao Cup.

It is reported that Liverpool's fierce foes Manchester United are also keen on the left-back. Alao is currently signed to scholarship terms at the Owls, meaning that he is available for much cheaper than if he were tied down to professional terms.

‘A great young player’

Speaking on Alao after he played in a Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby, Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen said via The Star:“As soon as he came on, they tried to bring extra people to his side. But he grew through the battle and wow. One of the important skills you need to have as a young player is to adapt; to adapt to the level, to new players and to everything. It was really, really good.

“He is a great young player. Wow. We have to be very careful with him. Just to have a normal training week at a Championship level is very tough for him.”

Liverpool transfer policy

Liverpool have signed plenty of youngsters to their academy from other clubs. It’s a strategy that the Reds have used to great success, with players either going on to become first-team members or being sold for significant profit.

In Arne Slot’s current set-up, Rio Nguomoha is very much part of things. The winger rejected terms at Chelsea to sign for Liverpool in August 2024. Ngumoha was regarded as one of the best talents in Chelsea’s youth ranks and he has made impressive progress at the Reds. He became Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer in the club’s history aged 16 and 361 days when bagging the winner in a 3-2 win over Newcastle United in August.

Meanwhile, Conor Bradley was recruited from Northern Ireland and is now Liverpool’s first-choice right-back after the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Trey Nyoni (Leicester City) is around the first-team picture. He made his Premier League debut in the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

In recent years, the Reds have banked substantial fees from selling players including Caoimhin Kelleher (£18 million), Ben Doak (£25 million) and Bobby Clark (£10 million).

Liverpool would likely see the potential arrival of Alao as a win-win as he could become a first-team member in the future or be developed and sold down the line.
