Former boss Steven Gerrard insists he could "make Rangers good again" had he made a return to the club. However, he hinted he did not "have the right tools" after talks over a return collapsed earlier this year.
Before the appointment of Danny Rohl as Russell Martin's successor, Gerrard was locked in talks with chairman Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises but walked away after several rounds of discussions. The former England international became a legend at the Glasgow giants after he ended Celtic's stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership by bringing the title to Ibrox in 2021.
Since the decision to remove himself from the running, he has claimed he held nagging doubts that forced him to step away from a stunning return to Glasgow. Speaking to Ally McCoist on TNT Sports 'Ally's Social Club' he has hinted the reason could be around the personnel in place behind the scenes and the standard of the squad.
US tycoon Cavenagh axed sporting sporting director Kevin Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart after they oversaw the ill-fated appointment of Martin and a poor summer recruitment drive. After Rohl suffered his first league defeat as boss against Hearts, the club are sit fourth in the table.
Gerrard told McCoist: "If you get the right tools, I've got the confidence in myself that I can make Rangers good again. But, if I'm not surrounded by the right people, haven't got the right tools, I'm not a magician."

Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in the midst of a disappointing Saudi Pro League season last term. Rumours have swirled that he could make a return to Liverpool as an interim replacement for Arne Slot.
He admits the Reds would be tough to turn down and said: “I’ll be brutally, brutally honest with you. I’d help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I’d help them with anything."
However, he has tipped the Dutchman to get it right this term, adding: "I don’t want the Arne Slot to lose his job.
"I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great. I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league.
"I’m a Liverpool fan. I want the best for Liverpool. But if Liverpool need me in any department at any time, I’ll be there for them."
