Significant update has now dropped regarding severity of Alexander Isak's injury for Liverpool

There is plenty of concern about how serious Alexander Isak’s injury is for Liverpool, with a fresh update now emerging regarding the situation.

The Reds may have won 2-1 away to Tottenham on Saturday evening, but it came at a cost, with Isak forced off injured straight after opening the scoring.

Liverpool’s record signing was clearly in a lot of pain, with Arne Slot admitting he was unsure how bad the injury was after the game:

“I don’t have any news on him, but if a player scores, then gets injured and then doesn’t come back on the pitch and doesn’t try to come back… which Conor Bradley, for example, did, but I had to take him off as well because he couldn’t go on, but if a player doesn’t even try to come back that’s usually not a good thing. But I cannot say anything more than that, that is just [a] gut feeling. Nothing medical to say about it.”

Now, The Athletic‘s David Ornstein has reported that Liverpool are concerned that Isak faces a long-term absence, with the reliable journalist providing more on X:

“Liverpool fear Alexander Isak suffered significant injury in challenge while scoring in Saturday’s victory at Tottenham Hotspur.LFC concern relates to 26 y/o Sweden striker’s lower left leg & intend to confirm once MRI scan results arrive.”

A cruel blow for Isak at a terrible time for Liverpool

A lengthy spell on the sidelines is such a big blow for both Liverpool and Isak himself, especially given the confidence he will have got by scoring such a well-taken goal against Spurs.

With Mohamed Salah at the Africa Cup of Nations and Cody Gakpo injured, the Reds’ attacking options feel horribly sparse, with so much now depending on Hugo Ekitike staying fit.

It surely heightens the need for Liverpool to add to their squad in the January transfer window, with Bournemouth attacker Antoine Semenyo continuing to be mentioned as a leading option.

Admittedly, the Reds have already spent big on the likes of Isak, Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, but if the former is out for several months, reinforcements must be looked at.
