Liverpool fans are used to seeing the right-back position under the spotlight. The Premier League and Europe demand quality from full-backs who can attack and defend. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid left a big gap on the right flank but Jeremie Frimpong, coming off a season with 30 goal contributions at Bayer Leverkusen, joined for £29.5 million to bring explosive pace and sharp attacking output to the right flank. Any time a top club looks at a young, talented wing-back, it immediately draws attention in Liverpool circles.

Top European clubs are always scouting for players who can make an immediate impact. Versatility, pace, and attacking threat are key. Reports linking players to Liverpool often stir debates, especially when Real Madrid enters the picture. Questions arise about whether current stars will retain their place or face new competition. Fans naturally compare these situations to the Anfield context, where full-backs are central to how the team plays.

Now, the details are emerging. Real Madrid are said to be keeping a close eye on Brazilian wing-back Wesley França, who has just begun life at Roma and has been linked to Liverpool in the past. The 22-year-old only made his Brazil debut this year but impressed at Flamengo before moving to Europe. Roma signed him on a five-year contract until 2030, paying €25 million plus €5 million in add-ons. França has adapted quickly, scoring three goals in 13 Serie A matches and playing a key role in Roma’s title bid.

European football expert Andy Brassell told talkSPORT: “If you sign Wesley, it’s not just that he’s a right-back and right-wing back. He’s played left-back and left-wing back as well for Roma. So, he looks pretty versatile.” He added that a January transfer is unlikely, mainly due to Roma’s squad depth: “Obviously, they’re not in the strongest financial position ever. But they’ve got Devyne Rensch as well. They’ve got Angelino when he comes back… So, they do have other options.”

For Trent Alexander-Arnold, now at Real Madrid, the situation highlights the need for defensive cover. Brassell explained: “Clearly, you need cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been good in patches, but of course, has suffered those two big injuries. Hopefully for him, he’ll be back, but he’s still adapting to Spanish football.” He also pointed to Carvajal as the current ideal competitor: “If Carvajal can get fit, he’s the ideal competitor slash sub for him in the meantime. But if we’re looking at the long term, Real Madrid do need defensive options.”

Brassell emphasized Wesley’s quality and adaptability: “Compared to a lot of wing-backs who are out there, what really impresses me about Wesley is not only the adaptability, that he can play right and left, and he’s very skilled in the attack. He can actually defend as well.” He concluded: “So, yeah, Real Madrid are absolutely right to keep an eye on him.” For Liverpool supporters, it is a reminder of how tightly connected full-back positions are to the team’s identity. While Alexander-Arnold recovers from injury in Madrid, the rise of players like Wesley França shows how top clubs constantly seek talent that can influence both defensive stability and attacking threat.
