When the January transfer window opens, Chelsea are likely to get offers for goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen. The Denmark international is eager to play more games before the World Cup next summer. The 23-year-old wants to leave the team for more chances, and he might finally get his wish in the new year.
The Blues will likely get offers for the goalkeeper during the January transfer window. Jorgensen has only played five times this season, and only once in the Premier League. Robert Sanchez remains Enzo Maresca’s clear first choice as a goalkeeper, and that is unlikely to change this season.
Because Denmark is in the 2026 World Cup, things have gotten more urgent for Jorgensen. The young goalkeeper knows that spending more time on the bench at Stamford Bridge will hurt his chances of playing for his country. Jorgensen is “itching to play” because the Danish national team coaches have reportedly told him that he needs to play regularly to be considered for the World Cup roster next summer.
In the summer of 2024, Jorgensen moved from Villarreal in Spain to Chelsea for a fee thought to be £20.9 million. He has played 28 times for the club. The Dane has been second to Sanchez since he got to West London, except for a short stretch of games last season. He only played in the Premier League this season when Sanchez got a red card, and they lost to Manchester United.
Chelsea would like to keep Jorgensen to keep the depth of their squad, but it might be hard to find a good replacement in January. The club has a tough choice to make: let him go or keep him on the team, risking an unhappy player who needs to play first-team football to reach his international goals.
Sanchez Form Makes Jorgensen’s Departure More Likely
Jorgensen had a real chance to take Sanchez’s place last season, but he didn’t take advantage of it. There is no chance of that happening this term because the Spaniard has been in such great shape.
Sanchez has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season, and he showed how good he is during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on Saturday. The Spanish goalkeeper’s long clearance found Joao Pedro, who turned his defender and slid a shot under the Newcastle goalkeeper to give Chelsea a point in the 66th minute.
Sanchez became the first Chelsea goalkeeper to assist in a Premier League game since Petr Cech did it in December 2010. He gave up two goals to the Magpies, but his overall contribution to Chelsea’s comeback showed why he can’t be dropped.
He has also kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper this season. He and Arsenal’s David Raya both have nine shutouts in the Premier League. Jorgensen, who moved from Villarreal to Chelsea in 2024, just can’t compete with Sanchez right now.
